False flag[edit]

True flag of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic since 9 November 1918

This flag (with huge moon and star) is absolutely false. The flag of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was not so. The moon and star were on the red field. You can see that in this photo taken from the first meeting of a parlament of Azerbaijan. Tricolor behind the Mamed Amin Rasulzade (Moon and eightpointed star are on the red field in the center). See this video from Museum of History of Azerbaijan. Flag made by Mamed Amin Rasulzade and Gulmammad Bagirov in Turkey. In this photo of Delegation from Azerbaijan Democtatic Republic in Hôtel Claridge [Avenue des Champs-Élysées] during Paris Peace Conference (1919) you can see the picture of flag behind the members of delegation. Please revert the correct version. --Interfase (talk) 21:05, 22 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I created the flag with the large crescent (and also the emblem) according to two western sources which claimed that the official flag was the one with large crescent, but the today's flag was also in use. You can find photos which verify both claims. At least, this one was an existing variant. Is there an official source?--Antemister (talk) 14:42, 23 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Your "two western sources"... eee... lie, or they didn't know historical facts. I showed you two historical photos where the crescent is on the red field. Can you show me just one historical photo with another version? You cannot, because your flag is myth. The conclusion about large crescent was based on the picture on the stamp. But this is just picture. You even can see the flag made by own Mammad Amin Rasulzade (one of the founders of ADR) in the Flag museum in Baku. The crescent and star are on the red field. Here is an article about Flag of Azerbaijan (Whitney Smith. Flag Lore Of All Nations. — Millbrook Press, 2001. — С. 13. — 112 с. — ISBN 9780761317531):

AZERBAIJAN (ah-zer-bie-JAHN): Ali Bay Huseynzada, the leading nationalist of Azerbaijan, created its modern national flag. The colors of that tricolor stood for the Turkic people (blue), their lslamic faith (green), and the commitment to modernization. In the center of the flag was the traditional Muslim star and cresent. The eight points stood for the eight Turkic peoples, including the Azerbaijanis. This flag was used from 1918 to 1920, when Azerbaijan was independent, and it was revived on February 5, 1991. After the fall of the Soviet Union, independence for Azerbaijan under this flag was proclaimed on August 30, 1991.

As you see even Whitney Smith claims that the modern national flag was used from 1918 to 1920. This variant, that used in articles about ADR, I consider a falsification of the history of the flag of Azerbaijan. --Interfase (talk) 17:43, 23 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Move request[edit]

{{editprotected}} This file should be moved away from the current title, as it is misleading on two levels. First, I think it's clear from the discussion above that this flag was a variant, and likely non-official. Second, Azerbaijan had another flag in the year 1918, which was used from the creation of the state on 28 May until November 9, when the tricolor was adopted. Right now, this (likely non-official) flag is being incorrectly used at pages like w:Caucasus Campaign, which deal with events that happened before it was even used, because its false title means it gets transcluded in the countrydata template for Azerbaijan. Therefore, I propose moving this to File:Flag of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan (November 1918, variant) or something similar. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 06:36, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Problem solved itself apparently. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 05:29, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Flag of Azerbaijan in 1918[edit]

The original flag of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (from 9 November 1918 till 28 April 1920) was with the crescent on the red field. See the flag made by the chairman of the National Council of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic Mammad Amin Rasulzade in the Museum of the History of Azerbaijan.

Also you can see the photo of the flag on the photo of the first meeting of the Azerbaijani parlament on the 7th December 1918 - the crescent is small and on the middle field.

In the photo of Delegation from Azerbaijan Democtatic Republic in Hôtel Claridge [Avenue des Champs-Élysées] during Paris Peace Conference (1919) you can see the picture of flag behind the members of delegation.

Also here is an article about Flag of Azerbaijan (Whitney Smith. Flag Lore Of All Nations. — Millbrook Press, 2001. — С. 13. — 112 с. — ISBN 9780761317531):

As you see even Whitney Smith claims that the modern national flag was used from 1918 to 1920.

We can also see the flag with the crescent on the red field behind the soldiers of ADR (See attached photo).

But this variant with the large crescent, that used here is wrong, it is just a variant, but not the correct flag. The original flag of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was the File:Flag of Azerbaijan.svg. --Interfase (talk) 13:03, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
