Either the description of the map or the map itself is wrong: There have never been 12 founding members of the EU. The EC was founded by 6 states (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands) and the European Union itself was founded by 15 members (the six of the EC plus the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Sweden, Finland and Austria).

No, EU was founded on the 1 November 1993. Sweden, Finland and Austria joined on 1 January 1995. So the map is correct. --Glentamara (talk) 07:07, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

No, it is showing the European Community, the legal successor to the European Economic Community. It existed until 1 December 2009, when it was legally replaced by the European Union. --Glentamara (talk) 15:17, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
