the answer is not so simple, in 1972, Emerson Fittipaldi was engaged with the #31 and the #20 wasn't attributed... In my opinion, this picture was taken during free practice with a third car... cobra bubbles (talk) 19:46, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Three points: 1) the car isn't wearing the World Champion's wreath that the Lotus cars carried during 1973, which was located beside the Union Jack just behind the front suspension mounting points; 2) the car is fitted with a 1972-style airbox, which Lotus phased out in early 1973 and was certainly obsolete by the time of the Austrian GP; 3) it's a Lotus 72D, not a 72E, as you can see from the way the sidepods are not smoothly integrated with the side of the monocoque and the relatively narrow nosecone. Make of that what you will. As Emmo never ran as #20 in any race prior to 1980 that I can find, and no Lotus 72 ever ran as #20, cobra bubbles may be right about the spare car. That may also explain the configuration. Nothing definitive either way so I'm inclined to believe the original uploader, who claims to have taken the shot, about where and when they took it, but the car is misidentified. I believe it's a photo of Fittipaldi driving his intended race car during practice/qualifying for the 1972 Austrian GP. FORIX lists entry numbers for that race as follows:
16/17 the Brabhams
18/19 the Ferraris
21 Dave Walker Lotus
22/23 the Williams Marches
Vol 2 of Mike Lang's Grand Prix! notes that Fittipaldi drove the team's spare car in the race. So my guess is that #20 was the number allocated to Fittipaldi's intended race car, and the spare car (which he raced) had its own number (31). User:DH85868993 on English Wikipedia
