"oil on canvas" repeated for "Medium" and the facet_medium parameter

Template:Google Art Project doesn't really document individual parameters, and I don't understand the general description regarding facet tags:

Facet tags used on a smaller number of images and providing additional information. The value in these may include a surrounding language template (like {{fr|value}}).

Because this file has both facet_medium = oil on canvas and Medium = {{technique|oil|canvas}} specified, they both appear inline for the Medium field in the summary -- to confusing and awkward effect, in my opinion.

Does anyone know what the purpose of the facet tags is?
