present not correct coat of arms[edit]

Correct version - File:Official coat of arms of the Republic of Belarus (v).svg. You can check it yourself here - http://narb.by/rus/services/etalon/ @Revent: protected this file and I don't know what to do now. Should I manualy change Coat of arms of Belarus to Official coat of arms of the Republic of Belarus (v) in thousands of pages in all langauges? --Glovacki (talk) 16:49, 24 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Glovacki: I'm not going to 'tell you to do so', but if you want to change the usages then that is exactly what you need to do (and there are software tools to make it non-tedious). You may not use the fact that an image is hosted on Commons to change local uses 'non-transparently', by overwriting the image with a different one. Changing the image should be done by edits to the individual pages, thus allowing the editors on each wiki to notice the image has been change (through their watchlist) and the ability to possibly choose which one they want to use (by reverting). @Revent: Thank you. But may be then this file should be renamed? Because it WAS official coat of arms of Belarus from 1995 till 2012 year. As we name File:Coat of Arms of Belarus (1991).svg that was offical coat of arms of Belarus from 1991 till 1995 year. --Glovacki (talk) 20:31, 24 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Rename[edit]

We have:

This names are very logical. But for the coats of arms the names are not so systematic:

I think we should rename files for the coats of arms like this:

Glovacki (talk) 09:19, 25 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Glovacki: The reply to this, generically, is that filenames shouldn't really be taken as an 'authoritative' indicator of what a file is... people should look at the file pages. We generally try to avoid renaming files as much as possible (you might want to look at COM:RENAME), simply to avoid breaking cases where a file is used externally to Wikimedia projects. If you think that they actually fit the criteria for renaming, then you should request it on the specific file pages, using the {{Rename}} template... there is a "Gadget" called RenameLink, which should be turned on by default, that makes creating such requests easy (it gives a interface for adding the template). This talk page is, to be honest, a very 'obscure' place to ask. Revent (talk) 19:01, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Revent: Thank you! I ask here, because I can not add {{Rename}} template in this file. It is blocked by you. --Glovacki (talk) 23:07, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Because of the past warring here, I'm reluctant to do it without a consensus. @Fry1989: Thoughts? Revent (talk) 23:19, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I am not prepared to support renaming of either file. Fry1989 eh? 23:56, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Revent: So what should I do now? I continue to change Coat of arms of Belarus.svg -> Official coat of arms of the Republic of Belarus (v).svg But in some articles we need image of Belarusian coat of arms that was from 1995 till 2012. Then Coat of arms of Belarus.svg should be remained. --Glovacki (talk) 10:59, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Glovacki: You can change the usages on other wikis to use the 'correct' image, subject to the policies of those various wikis, and make sure that the file descriptions on Commons are accurate. As I said, file names on Commons should not be considered to be 'authoritative evidence' of what an image actually is.... in general, they are left alone as much as possible, for the sake of not breaking incoming links. Moving A -> B, then C -> A would 'transparently' cause reusers image use to change from A -> C. This would be a bad thing. Revent (talk) 17:08, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Outdated[edit]

This file is two years out of date as Belarus changed its emblem in 2020 to this. Thus, this file is outdated and should be replaced with that one and afterwards that one turned into a redirect to this file, and this current file uploaded under a new filename of File:Coat_of_arms_of_Belarus_(1995–2020).svg, as this is supposed to represent the current iteration of the emblem by its very name. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 16:35, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
