Representation of orders and supporters[edit]

This is an incomplete representation of Sir Ninian Stephen's arms:

  • KG - It is correct to display both a representation of the collar and the garter in a full emblazonment of the arms. In this instance, the collar is displayed outside the garter and is represented in gold with 26 buckled garters, in the correct colour, each surrounding a rose, the garter alternated with gold knots all joined up with chain links of gold. From the collar is suspended the 'George' or figure of St George on horseback encountering the dragon in colour. (AC Fox-Davies, 1925 [1996 reprint], The Wordsworth Complete Guide to Heraldry, ISBN 9781853263651, pp 562-63)
  • AK - represented by a circlet of the same design and colours as the circlet that is at the centre of the Badge of a Companion of the Order and may suspend there from a representation of the Ribbon of the Order together with: (a) in the case of a Knight or Dame—a representation of the Neck Badge of a Knight (2014, Order of Australia Booklet, pp 34, 36)
  • GCMG - Knights Grand Cross place the circlet of the order and the collar with the badge around their shields... The circlet of the order is of blue edged with gold, and bearing in gold letters the motto of the order, 'Auspicium melioris ævi'. The collar is composed alternatively of lions of England, of Maltese crosses, and of the ciphers S.M. and S.G., and having in the centre an Imperial crown over two lions passant guardant, each holding a bunch of seven arrows. At the opposite point of the collar are two similar lions. The whole is of gold except the crosses which are of white enamel, and the various devices are linked together by small gold chains. (Fox-Davies, pp 566-67)
  • GCVO - Knights Grand Cross surround their shields with the collar and circlet of the order which is of dark blue carrying in letters of gold the motto 'VICTORIA'. (Fox-Davies, pp 567)
  • KBE - Knights Grand Cross surround their shields with the collar and circlet of the order which is of crimson gold and carrying in letters of gold the motto 'FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE'. (Fox-Davies, pp 567)
  • Supporters - each of the KG, AK, GCM and GCVO entitle Sir Ninian to the grant of supporters. Given his arms went granted until his tenure as Governor General (in anticipation of which he was created GCMG), it is more likely than not that these were granted at the same time as the arms. Thus far I have been unsuccessful in tracking down information on the actual grant of arms as opposed to evidence derived from observation of his banner in the Windsor Chapel.
Done, version with all orders, medals omited according to heraldic uses. Not avaiable supporters at sources.--Heralder (talk) 00:40, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
