I'm not entirely sure I see any joke here, as the intention is entirely to explain the science. However, the diagram is a representation in 2-dimensional space of a multi-dimensional space. Such dimensions could be change in any characteristic of organisms in a population. The 'morphology' dimension thus represents a scale from some starting value to progressively more different values (you can think of them as eigenvalues if that helps you).
