Is that a giant sequoia?[edit]

The tree in the center of the photo looks like Sequoiadendron giganteum, yet MPF removed the corresponding category. Am I incorrect? — hike395 (talk) 20:26, 1 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Hike395: - yes; I removed it (and many others) per COM:OVERCAT - Category:Calaveras Big Trees State Park is a subcategory of Category:Sequoiadendron giganteum (named groves), which in turn is a subcategory of Category:Sequoiadendron giganteum. Individual files should not be in both categories, as otherwise the higher level categories get over-filled (imagine if every file showing a tree was put in Category:Trees!). I can see it is tricky, as Category:Calaveras Big Trees State Park may contain files that do not show Sequoiadendron giganteum: in which case, it should ideally not be a (sub-)subcategory of Category:Sequoiadendron giganteum. I'd welcome your thoughts as how best to deal with this! - MPF (talk) 20:46, 1 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think I see the problem. Strictly, Calaveras Big Trees State Park is not a named grove. It's a park that contains two named groves: North Calaveras Grove and South Calaveras Grove.[1] I will remove the park from the list of named groves, which should solve the problem of OVERCAT. — hike395 (talk) 23:57, 1 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
