Catherine Kirkwood's portrait in grattage, seen here in detail, rests on a verticle rectangle of over-all red, streaked with umber over a pale blue-green that floats on a yellow underpainting boardering the patterned rectangle and setting off the face. Robert Kushner, who at the time was the star pattern-painter to whose meditation group Catherine introduced me, never once mentioned to me about my use of patterning as the foundation for my grattage works.
