I have doubts that the picture was taken 29 July 1943.

There were three heavy air attacks against Cologne in the weeks before:

  • the night between the 28 and 29 June 1943 (the RAF hit big parts of the inner city, see here (4377 dead, about 10 000 people hurt, 230.000 unhoused)
  • 3rd/4th july (against Köln-Kalk, east of the center: [1]
  • 9th july

The book (1980) Frontstadt Köln. Endkampf 1945 an Rhein und Ruhr (containing many pictures) may be a key to that question. --Neun-x (talk) 08:53, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
