Landscape format vs. portrait format[edit]

I completely agree with you: photos of this kind look better in the portrait format. At the same time I think this concrete photograph needs the “landscape”.

First, the branch on the right impedes the construction of a landscape-oriented composition. Then, I wanted to keep as much of this blurred blue-green background as possible. I think it work well for a bright and warm picture of the spring. As well I didn’t want to lose the branch. Dark and dead, it contrasts with general spring mood of the photo and is acting as, so to say, “a supplementary focus of attention”.

It may well be, that all these don't work in reality; I understand that controversial opinions can be given on this photo. I tried the square format (with the bird house on the left), it isn’t so bad, but finally I decided in favour of the landscape-oriented picture.
