White flags on white background[edit]

Please keep version with gray border for all flags with white edges - Wikig | talk to me | 08:02, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why? What is wrong with removing it and using the border attribute: [[Image:name.jpg|border]]? --Benn Newman 13:58, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, you're right (I didn't know this feature), it is just that a lot of pages would have to be updated with the border attribute, such as F1 flags on French wiki for example - Wikig | talk to me | 10:30, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I tried to update the above mentioned French page to see what it does when adding borders to bordeless flags. The flags with a black border align actually better as there is no extra border added on the black portion of the flags, thus a better aspect on the page. I definitely think we should keep that version as there are some versions without border already on Commons see : Category:Formula One flags - Wikig | talk to me | 11:50, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think there should be no border on flag images, so as to yield the correct description of what the flag actually looks like. In some situations, they might then blend into the background in an undesirable way, but that is more an issue of how to present the depiction of the flag rather than how to accurately depict the flag. (With another background colour, some other flag might blend in.) So, what should be discussed is how to, at the presentation stage, make the flag stand out. To get your imagination going, here are some (not necessarily useful) ideas:

  • border
  • drop shadow
  • avoiding white background (which seems to be what in practise causes trouble), using for example light gray instead
  • 3D rendering of a curled and lighted flag image
  • background that changes colours
  • background consisting of a pattern (not just a solid colour)
