me think that he feeds on water thyme, and smells of it.To this belief the fish evidently owes itsname Thymallus. Our graylings spawn in April and May,the eggs hatch in from nine to seventeendays at temperatures of 50 to 60 degrees, and the yolk sac is absorbed in eight or tendays, when the young fishes rise from thebottom of the hatching troughs and beginto feed. The number of eggs depositedvaries from three thousand to four thousand. Many of the eggs received from Bozemanfailed to hatch, doubtless owing to the factthat they were treated like trout eggs andplaced in hatching troughs. Had they beenplaced in glass hatching jars, as is done atBozeman, and kept in motion by wateradmitted from below, we might have hatcheda larger proportion of the eggs received. The Aquarium has at present nearly onethousand tropical fishes representing aboutone hundred different species. They makean exhibition of life from the coral reefs thatis full of color and movement. 1058 ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY BULLETIN
