Summary[edit]

Description
English: Głębowice village (southern Poland), church concourse: 16th-century medieval tombstone epitaph of the Roman-German Silesian knight and nobleman Jakob Saszowski of Saszow and Geraltowitz alias Geraltowsky (Polish: Jakuba Saszowski z Saszow i Gierałtowic, alias Gierałtowski) of the Silesian nobility House of Saszowski (Szaszowski), date 1546, owner of the village and Lord Chief Judge of the historical Duchy of Oświęcim (German Herzogtum Auschwitz). Relief shows a knight in armour, sword and shield (showing an "eagle displayed head couped": the personal coat of arms of the House of Saszowski), surrounded by medieval Latin inscription. The medieval tombstone epitaph was originally placed to the outside wall of the church Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Głębowice (Polish: kościoła Matki Bożej Szkaplerznej w Głębowicach) until 1854, then embedded into the church brick column gate post. It is one of the oldest tombstone epitaphs found on the territory of Lesser Poland, a registered cultural heritage monument in Oświęcim County.
