Summary[edit]

Description
English: Ryo-O-Prince Ryo
This is a dancing figure of Ryo-o, one of the typical court dances called "bugaku". Ryo-o is said to be a handsome and brave prince of ancient China. Whenever he went to battle, he wore a menacing mask to frighten his enemies. This piece portrays him as a brave man beaming with great joy as he defeated the forces of his most formidable enemy at a castle. Bugaku, the court dances of Japan, were introduced from India, China and Korea, and were adopted to conform with the national tradition in the 7th century. They have been preserved under the patronage and protection of the Imperial Court.
