Parts of the takeup spool of the Soviet Yauza 209-1 reel-to-reel tape recorder

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Parts of the takeup spool of the Soviet Yauza 209-1 reel-to-reel tape recorder. . Here is one of the disks with three friction pads. Pretty worn but it works. The spool of a simple tape recorder is a complex affair. This one has two friction clutches. They (a) prevent jolts of tape tension at the end of the reel (b) stabilize tape tension during playback and recording, which would otherwise vary from the beginning to the end of the reel. This is a so-called weight-sensitive clutch: it adjust tension depending on the weight of the reel of tape.
