Printed on verso: Pulpit Rock - Joseph Luxillo, an Indian who was baptized at the Methodist Mission in about 1840, remembers the early missionaries preaching to the Indians from the top of this rock, on which Daniel Lee chiseled out a seat and called the Indians from a great distance, by blowing a long tin horn.
Handwritten on verso: Compliments of R.S. Shackelford, The Dalles, Or., April 7, 1908.
Filed in: Oregon--Cities--The Dalles

The first attempts to convert Indians in the Oregon country were made by Methodist missionaries in 1834. A group led by Rev. Jason Lee (including his nephew Daniel Lee) established several missions and recruited over fifty Americans to proselytize the Christian faith. Failing to convert Indians on a large-scale, Lee was removed as superintendent of the missions in 1843.
