(geb. 1797, gest. 1888, ab 1861 König von Preußen, ab 1871 Deutscher Kaiser) „Es ist nicht leicht, unter einem solchen Kanzler Kaiser zu sein.“ (Wilhelm I. über Bismarck) 1829 heiratete Kronprinz Wilhelm Prinzessin Augusta von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, eine Enkelin von Zarin Katharina der Großen. Mit ihr hatte er zwei Kinder. Die Niederschlagung der Berliner Barrikadenkämpfe während der Märzrevolution 1848 trug Wilhelm den Schmähnamen „Kartätschenprinz“ ein, zu Unrecht, denn er hatte gar keine Kommandogewalt in Berlin - wohl aber 1849 bei der Niederschlagung der Revolutionen in der Pfalz und in Baden. 1857 übernahm Wilhelm von seinem erkrankten Bruder die Regierungsgeschäfte. 1861 wurde er König, die Liberalen errangen in zwei Wahlen die Mehrheit im Preußischen Abgeordnetenhaus, und es kam über die Heeresreform zum Verfassungskonflikt. Wilhelm I. ernannte Otto von Bismarck zum Ministerpräsidenten, und der entschied den Verfassungskonflikt energisch und nahe dem Verfassungsbruch zu Gunsten des Königs. Damit begann die enge Zusammenarbeit zwischen den beiden Männern, die trotz vieler Auseinandersetzungen über ein Vierteljahrhundert andauern sollte. Höhepunkt dieser Zusammenarbeit war nach drei Einigungskriegen die Gründung des Deutschen Kaiserreichs und die Proklamation Wilhelms I. zum Deutschen Kaiser am 18. Januar 1871 in Versailles. Der konservative preußische König nannte diesen Tag den „unglücklichsten seines Lebens.“ Er fühlte, dass mit der Kaiserproklamation das Ende des alten Preußens eingeleitet wurde. |
