Der "Große Kurfürst" besiegte die Schweden, er schuf ein stehendes Heer, begann eine einheitliche Staatsverwaltung aufzubauen. Friedrich Wilhelm heiratete 1646 die niederländische Prinzessin Luise Henriette von Oranien, mit der er sechs Kinder hatte, von denen drei das dritte Lebensjahr nicht erreichten. 1668 heiratete er die verwitwete Dorothea von Braunschweig und Lüneburg, mit der er sieben Kinder hatte. Um seinen Sohn den Wirren des Dreißigjährigen Krieges zu entziehen, schickte sein Vater Georg Wilhelm den jungen Friedrich Wilhelm zur Ausbildung in die Niederlande, die im 17. Jahrhundert ihr Goldenes Zeitalter halten. Mit zwanzig Jahren wurde Friedrich Wilhelm Kurfürst des kriegsgeschüttelten Brandenburgs. Der westfälische Frieden beendete zwar 1648 den Dreißigjährigen Krieg, aber auch danach wurde Brandenburg wiederholt in die Auseinandersetzungen der Großmächte hineingezwungen. 1660 erreichte er die Anerkennung der vollen Souveränität über Preußen durch Schweden und Polen. 1675 besiegte Friedrich Wilhelm die wieder in die Mark eingefallenen Schweden bei Fehrbellin, anschließend vertrieb er sie aus Vorpommern. Im tiefen Winter 1670 jagte er sein Heer mit 1.100 Schlitten über das kurische Haff und vertrieb die Schweden auch aus Ostpreußen. Doch als Verhandlungspartner wurde Brandenburg noch immer nicht ernst genommen: Im Frieden von Saint Germain (1670) musste der Kurfürst Vorpommern an Schweden zurückgeben. Erst gegen Ende seiner Regierungszeit konnte er darangehen, seine weit verstreuten Herrschaftsgebiete zu modernisieren und neu zu besiedeln. Mit dem Edikt von Potsdam 1685 warb er 20.000 verfolgte Hugenotten aus Frankreich. Die dafür notwendige Toleranz musste er gegen Widerstände erzwingen. Aus Wien kamen die ersten Juden nach Brandenburg. |
