Summary[edit]

Description
English: The 20 mm anti-aircraft gun is one of the weapons on display at the USS Abatan memorial. Originally an “oiler,” the USS Abatan was commissioned 29, 1945. Her mission was to carry water to fleets in the Caribbean. The Abatan served faithfully in various battles including Caroline Islands, Islands, Okinawa, Shanghai and Eniwetok Atoll. In 1964, Fidel Castro cut off the fresh water supply to Guantanamo Bay, and once again the Abatan was called into action supplying water to Sailors and Marines on base. On Jan. 18, 1980 the Abatan served her country a final time… as a target.
