The two confronting rocks, overhangingthe verge at the height of a hundred feet or more,could be readily united by a bridge, from whichsome of the grandest views of natural scenery inthe world could be obtained—while just in front of,and within reaching distance of the arrowy water,from a table one-third of the way below the brinkof the fall, all its nearest beauties and terrors maybe caught at a glance. We rambled around the falls and canon twodays, and left them with the unpleasant convictionthat the greatest wonder of our journey had beenseen. A few scattered sentences, culled from Dr. Hay-dens calmly scientific account of the falls, willsuffice to show that Mr. Langfords description oersteps not the modesty of nature. UPPER FALLS OF THE YELLOWSTONE. OBANI) CANON AND THE FALLS. 87 through a grassy, meadow-like valley, with a calm,steady current, giving no warning, until very nearthe falls, that it is about to rush over a precipice 140feet, and then, within a quarter of a mile, again toleap down a distance of 350 feet. From any point of view the Upper Falls are ex-tremely picturesque and striking. The entire volumeof water seems to be, as it were, hurled off of theprecipice with the force which it has accumulatedin the rapids above, so that the mass is detachedinto the most beautiful snow-white, bead-like drops,and as it strikes the rocky basin below, it shootsthrough the water with a sort of ricochet for thedistance of 200 feet. The whole presents in thedistance the appearance of a mass of snow-whitefoam. On the sides of the basalt walls there is athick growth of vegetation, nourished by the sprayabove, which extends up as far as the moisture canreach. .... After the waters roll over the upperdescen
