For, whether found in the canals of the sponge them-selves, or embedded in the sponge-substance, the livingsponge-particles are represented each by a semi-inde-pendent mass of protoplasm. So that the first view Iwould have youtake of thesponge as a liv-ing mass, is, thatit is a colonyand not a singleunit.
