Erinnern für die Zukunft – Nordstraße 25

Das 1898 fertiggestellte Wohnhaus steht unter Denkmalschutz. Es bildet ein
städtebaulich wichtiges Element des gesamten „Hohenzollernviertels“ mit
dem heutigen Karl-Marx-Platz und den umliegenden Straßen.

Das Gebäude im historischen Stil mit kunstvoller Fassadengestaltung zeigt
die örtliche Baukunst des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts. Bauherr und
Architekt war der namhafte Wittener Bauunternehmer Friedrich Lünenbürger.

In diesem Mietshaus wohnten stets Menschen in lebendiger Vielfalt unter
einem Dach: Arbeiterfamilien und Lehrerinnen, Kinder, Witwen, Studenten,
Rentner und Geschäftsleute fanden hier ihr Zuhause.

Zu ihnen gehörten Hermann Stern und Familie Singer – von Wittener Nazis
verfolgt, vertrieben oder ermordet. Das „Putzgeschäft“ (Boutique) von
Franziska Singer in der Bahnhofstraße war das erste Wittener Geschäft, das
der „Arisierung“ zum Opfer fiel.

Juden Christen, Muslime, Menschen mit und ohne Religion waren einander
Nachbarn in diesem Haus. Sie erlebten Toleranz und friedriches Miteinander,
aber auch Verfolgung, Vertreibung und Entmietung.

Gute Nachbarschaft soll die Zukunft dieses Hauses prägen.
