Erinnern für die Zukunft – Nordstraße 16

Hier lebte von 1921 bis 1938 der Arzt Dr. Julius Böheimer mit seiner Frau
Charlotte und seinen beiden Söhnen. Die Praxisräume befanden sich im
Erdgeschoss. Als assimilierter Jude war Julius Böheimer in der Synagogen-
gemeinde aktiv und ein in Witten anerkannter Bürger. In der Pogromnacht
am 9. November 1938 flüchtete die Familie vor brutalen Angriffen der Nazis
zu den Nachbarn.

Im Mai 1939 verließ die Familie Witten, da den Söhnen hier der Schulbesuch
laut NS-Gesetz verweigert wurde. Die Familie fand Aufnahme bei der Mutter
von Charlotte Böheimer in Köln.

Julius Böheimer konnte als „Krankenbehandler für Juden und Zigeuner“ in
Köln noch einige Zeit praktizieren. Zweimal wurde er in ein KZ verschleppt,
wobei er sich aufgrund einer Kriegsauszeichnung retten konnte. Sein älterer
Sohn wurde zum Zwangsdienst verpflichtet und 1945 noch für zwei Monate
in KZ-Haft verschleppt. Der jüngere Sohn konnte 13-jährig mit einem
Kindertransport nach England in Sicherheit gebracht werden.

Julius Böheimer verstarb 1958 in Köln im Alter von 67 Jahren.
