| Description | William W. Kimball House in Chicago (1892). Kimball founded the Kimball Piano Company in 1857. In 1877, Kimball began to sell organs as well. Kimball built a factory in 1887, and sales greatly increased after the 1893 World's Fair. In the 1950s, a new factoyr was built in Melrose Park, but its high costs crippled the company. The company was sold to the Jasper Corporation in 1959. The Jasper takeover was very successful, and Kimball was again the top producer of pianos by the end of the 1960s; in fact, Jasper changed their name to Kimball International to take advantage of the brand name. Due to a world slowdown of piano and organ purchases, Kimball stopped producing these products in 1996. |
