Description
English: Bust portrait of a man in a suit facing forward. "Wm. Mordecai Cooke. Wm. Mordecai Cooke, born at Portsmouth, Va., Dec. 11th, 1823, Son of Mordecai and Margaret (Kearnes) Cooke. Died April 14th, 1863 at Petersbug [sic], Va. Direct descent from Mordecai Cooke of Mordecai's Mount, Gloucester County, Virginia, 1650. Graduate in Law of University of Virginia in 1843. Married 1846, Eliza, daughter of Henry and Rosalie (Saugrain) von Phul. Judge of Court Pleas, Hannibal, Missouri, 1849. Special commissioner from Governor Jackson to President of the Confederate States, 1861. Aid on Staffs Governor Claiborne F. Jackson and General Sterling Price. Member Confederate Congress." (in type below image). William Cooke was born in Portsmouth, Va. on December 11,1823. After receiving a law degree in his home state, Cooke moved to St. Louis where he set up a private practice and by 1849 was a State Court Judge. He married Eliza von Phul, daughter of the famous St. Louisan Henry von Phul. In the early years of the Civil War, Cooke served as a Colonel and volunteer aide-de-camp and as a staff member of Governor Jackson. He was elected to be a delegate in the Confederate Provisional Congress from 1861-1862 and served as a Missouri Representative in the Confederate Congress from 1862-1863. Cooke died while in office on April 14, 1863 at Petersburg, Va. Although the original place of burial is unknown, he was reburied at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis.
