English: Wild garlic, Allium ursinum Also known as Ramsons, Bear's Garlic and Wood Garlic.
A common plant in damp places with dappled shade so this little bit of woodland is an ideal habitat. There was a thick carpet of the plants under the trees. The whole plant is edible and has been used both as a vegetable and for flavouring. Wild garlic also has great health giving properties and is said to be more potent than cultivated garlic, A. sativum. It has antioxidant properties which reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and the juice can be used as an antiseptic. The typical garlic odour is caused by allicin, a sulphur compound present in the plant. |
