Summary[edit]

Description

Renowned for outstanding salmon and steelhead fishing and exhilarating whitewater challenges, the North Umpqua River outside of Roseburg offers an ideal setting for many recreational pursuits. The North Umpqua provides the right challenge for all types of rafters and kayakers, from placid Class I waters to roaring Class IV rapids. The best months to raft are May, June and early July. Later in the summer as the water flows decrease, boaters test their rock-maneuvering skills as the rapids become more technical. Almost 34 miles of the North Umpqua have been designated as a Wild and Scenic River and this section has been set aside exclusively for fly-fishing. The 79-mile-long North Umpqua Trail parallels the river and offers visitors challenging hiking and mountain biking experiences.

This particular kayaking footage is from a section called ‘the narrows’ and was captured in the spring of 2013.

Before you head out to the river employ these simple safety tips:

1. Have the proper gear: dress for the water temperature, not the air temp, have gear that is specifically designed for whitewater, always wear a life jacket/PFD that is designed for whitewater, have a boat that is made for whitewater; 2. Boat with competent people who can not only take care of themselves but have the ability to help you if the need arises; 3. Take the time to learn and practice rescue skills; 4. Don't boat a section of water you are not willing to swim; 5. Leave the alcohol at home; and most importantly. 6. Have fun.
