Text Appearing Before Image:
down on the shores near-est us, and resolved, on getting near, on a cautious and silent land-ing. After many a trial we found a creek where the stern of thegig could be backed into fairly deep water, along a ledge of rock, and then two of us got out. The ladies produced their knittingmaterials. With much painful stooping and crawling we at length reachedthe middle ridge, and there laid down our rifles to have a prelim-inary peep round. That stealthy glance revealed the fact thaton the other side, also, the seals had been alarmed, and had leftthe rocks; but still they were not far away. We could see l)ereand there a black and glistening head moving among the lappingwaters. Of course it would have been madness to have riskedour all on a random shot at sea. In their fright andwrath they come nearer and nearer; at times they remain mo-tionless overhead; but ever continues the shrill and piercingshriek. The face of the Youth is awful to see. Again and againhe puts up his rifle ; and there is no doubt that, if he were tofire, he might accomplish that feat which is more frequently heardof in novels than elsewhere—shooting a bird on the wing with arifle. But then he is loath to throw away his last chance. Witha gesture of despair he lowers his weapon, and glances towardthe gig. Queen Titania has caught his eye, and he hers. She islaughing. At length we venture to
