Among the artists figure subjefts hisdecorative canvas entitled Youth, whichwas exhibited at the 1911 Paris Salon desBeaux Arts, is a beautiful arrangementin white, which well illustrates the firm-ness of his modelling. The pi6lure showstwo girls at their dressing-table,— ofLouis XVI design, as is the chair and stoolthey are seated on,—with old chintz onthe wall. The painters Autumn, a nude, is asvivid in its delineation and as sparklingas a painting from the brush of Zorn,without being quite as naturalistic andfrank in its vision. La Toillette, which theMetropolitan Museum has acquired bygift, is a delightful arrangement of de-licious colours: agreeable pale blues and C 55 )pinks in the chintz curtains are repeatedin the vase of flowers and in the womansgarments. It is also extremely pleasingon account of its composition; in fa6l,design is one of this artists strongestpoints. w r.

Thetruth of this statement is apparent whenone considers the artists paintings andpastels in which he has found his inspi-ration at some cafe chantant, with all itsvivid colour and glare of lights; whenone considers the pastels of the meanerstreets of New York and Paris, the mas-terly studies in red chalk from the nude,the portraits, done almost in imitation ofoils, after the manner of La Tour, thevivacious decorations executed both in oiland in red chalk that recall a French mas-ter of the eighteenth century; and, finally,when one remembers the artists decora- tive panels,executed on an immense scaleand intended to adorn great spaces. It isin the pastels and sanguine drawings,however, that we find the artists workmost deserving of serious consideration.Shinn may
