essful as to preventa wide-spread impression that a leign of terror has existedthroughout the Southern States, and that life and propertywere insecure. This is the only reason why the thousands ofeager emigrants who are longing to occupy a land of so muchfertility and loveliness, still linger and hesitate. The future of the South is in the hands of her own people, and now that the heated canvass of a Presidential election isended, we firmly believe that they are entering upon a newand most auspicious era—that disorder and violence will berestrained—that the recollection of conflicts will soon fadebefore the resistless march of events—that the same politicaland social toleration prevailing in other portions of our land, will be here recognized and respected ; and that while fallingpeacefully into line, to meet the living issues of the hour, theSouthern people will extend to the immigrant of every landand condition, their far-famed hospitality and welcome. YIEGIXIA. This noble State is conspicuous, not only for its great re-sources, deliglitful climate, and the generous hospitality ofits people, but also for the nuinber of patriots and states-men who have sprung from its soil, chief among Avhomwas AVashington, whose name will be revered through alltime, and whose hallowed ashes still repose at Mount Vernon,in the bosom of his native State. Virginia suffered muchthroughout the late war as a prominent theater of action forthe contending armies, and as the scene of some of its mostmemorable and decisive battles; and no Southern State nowaffords greater inducements for immigration, or more ur-gently invites it. If the emigrant prefers to remain near tlie blue waterswhich perhaps floated him to our shores, he may find landsat reasonable prices near Chesapeake Bay, or the sea-coast.Would he penetrate the interior, Virginia invites him to thefertile banks of the Potomac or the James, or other of hermagnificent rivers, or, still farther inland,
