through! Up themud walls they swarm! Major Wilkinsonfalls inside, dead, three times shot through andthrough! Lieutenant Lavack, with a luck thatis like a charm, lands in the midst of thehunting-shirt men without a scratch! They re-ceive him hilariously, offer whisky and compli-ments, and assure him that they like his style.Lieutenant Lavack accepts the whisky and thecompliments, and gains distinction as the onelive Englishman over the Generals mud wallsthis January day. The field is swept of hostile English; all issilent in front, and not a shot is heard. Nowwhen the firing Is wholly on one side, the Gen-eral passes the word for the hunting-shirt mento cease. The hard-working Coffee comes up, facea-smudge of powder stains; for he has beentaking his turn with a rifle, like any other hunt-ing-shirt man. He finds the General as drunkon battle as some folk are on brandy. They cant beat us, Coffee! cries theGeneral, wringing his friends big hand. Bythe living Eternal they cant beat us! 212

o q < ? 5 5 o t-< AMONG THE STUBBLE The General unslings his ramshackle tele-scope, and leaps upon the mud walls for asurvey of the field. The less curious Coffee de-votes himself to wiping the sweat and powdersmudges from his face. His Impromptu toiletresults only In unhappy smears, which makehim resemble an overgrown sweep. He looksat his watch. Sharp, short work! he mutters, as henotes that they have been fighting but twenty-five minutes. Those plantation buildings are still blazing,no more than half-burned down, and the smokehides the scene toward the river. The Generalturns his ramshackle spyglass upon his Imme-diate front. The ground is fairly carpetedwith dead English. As he gazes he calls toColonel Coffee, who Is now broadening thepowder smears Ingeniously with the sleeve ofhis hunting shirt. Jump up here. Coffee! cries the General, Its like resurrection day! Thus urged. Colonel Coffee abandons his at-tempts to improve his looks, and joins the Gen-eral on the mud walls.
