Title
English: Whaling boat and whale, ca. 1918
Description
English: By 1900, whalers in the northern Pacific were using steam-powered chaser boats. A harpoon-cannon, mounted on the bow of the boat, fired an explosive harpoon into the whale to kill it. After the boat reached the whale, the whalers pumped air into the body to make it float. They then towed the whale to a shore-based whaling station for processing.

This photo shows the bow of an American Pacific Whalling Company chaser boat as it reaches a newly-caught whale. The barrel of the harpoon-cannon is in the upper left. The photo was taken in the northern Pacific Ocean, probably between 1911 and 1925.
