Duringthis day we received a brisk fire from the enemysworks.1 Hood brought with him the 69th Regiment (nowthe 2nd battalion Welsh Regiment) from Barbados,besides General Prescott and the 28th Regiment(now the Gloucestershire) and two companies of the13th (the Somerset Light Infantry) which he hadpicked up at Antigua. His intention had been toattack de Grasse, whose fleet lay off Basseterre atdaybreak on the 24th, but a collision between theAlfred and the Nymphe necessitated a change of planand the fleet lay to for a day, during which the Espien,a French cutter, loaded with stores for the siege andcommanded by a Knight of Malta, was captured.At 1 p.m. on the 24th Hood rounded the south endof Nevis, and enticing de Grasse with his twenty-four ships of the line and two fifties out to sea, hesuccessfully captured the anchorage, a brilliantmanoeuvre, which was watched by crowds of excitedonlookers from the slopes of Nevis.
