| Description |
English: This is a 1968 reconstruction of the Wells Print Shop, built after William Charles Wells, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, fled to St. Augustine when the British pulled out of Charleston in 1782. Their operation did not last long, as the 1783 Treaty of Paris returned Florida to the Spanish, and Wells moved to England, practicing medicine for the rest of his life, finally passing away in London in 1817. The building was reconstructed as part of an effort to restore the colonial appearance of the city by the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, which reconstructed several other houses and structures from the colonial period during the 1960s and 1970s. |
