English: Built in 1868, this Italianate and Greek Revival-style building replaced an earlier courthouse that stood on the same site from 1850 until it was destroyed by United States Army soldiers under the command of General George Stoneman in 1864, leading to the Virginia House Hotel across the street being utilized as a temporary courthouse. The courthouse has the distinction of being the only courthouse to be built in Virginia during reconstruction. The building features a red brick exterior, a hipped roof, bracketed eaves, six-over-six double-hung windows with decorative pedimented hoods, a three-story front portico with doric columns, a main entrance door with sidelights and a transom with roman lattice motif mullions, a stained glass window at the center bay of the second floor of the front facade, a two-tier rooftop tower with bracketed eaves and eight-over-eight double-hung windows, a stone base, and a two-story modern rear addition. The building is a contributing structure in the Abingdon Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The courthouse presently houses the 28th Judicial District Court of Virginia.
