| Description |
The White House, looking north from the Washington Monument in 1968, The White House has been the official residence of the U.S. President since 1801. It was built in 1792-1800. It was burned by the British army in the War of 1812, mostly rebuilt by 1817, and expanded in the 1820s. The West Wing (left) and East Wing were built around 1901 and 1927, respectively. They have been expanded since then. President Truman famously added the balcony to the south portico in 1947. The White House was gutted, given a new framework, and rebuilt over several years, beginning in 1948. |
