Summary[edit]
DescriptionWarren Historic District - 20220726 - 04 - Warren County Chamber of Business & Industry (former Wilton M. Lindsey House) and Miniature St. Louis Arch.jpg |
English: The Warren County Chamber of Business & Industry, 308 Market Street, Warren, Pennsylvania, July 2022. Built in 1878, this is a delightful example of Second Empire architecture that's distinguished by ornate detail, for instance in the brackets that undergird the projecting slate-tiled mansard roof, the pedimented dormers that perforate said mansard, and the ornamental ironwork in the balconets fronting the second-floor windows. Note also the rustication around the arched main entrance. The house was built for Judge Wilton Monroe Lindsey (1841-1915), who, though he's by far better known as an attorney, jurist, and local political figure, began his career as an educator. A native of nearby Russell, Lindsey, then a recently returned Civil War veteran, matriculated at the Pennsylvania State Normal School in Edinboro and served a term as Warren County's school superintendent before resigning to reestablish himself in the career that would ultimately bring him fame. His ascent was rapid: aside from local prominence as partner in the firm of Johnson, Lindsey & Parmlee, he served for two years in the state legislature (1877-1879) and was appointed in 1898 to the post of President Judge of the state's 54th Judicial District. Lindsey lived in the house until his death, and in the intervening years its function has shifted from residence to medical offices and finally to the offices of the Warren County Chamber of Business & Industry, to which the building has been home since 2003. Additionally, the WCCBI are the masterminds behind the miniature replica of the Gateway Arch that stands in front of the building, a tribute to the local steel industry that furnished about 80% of the material for the real-life original in St. Louis. It's a quirky local attraction that has been featured in the pages of Roadside America among other places. |
