Der 1024 zuerst urkundlich erwähnte Ort ist gleichsam die Fortsetzung einer römischen Ansiedlung bei einem Kastell des obergermanischen Limes nahe der Mündung der Gersprenz in den Main. Seine Ausgrabung seit 1855 lieferte wichtige Funde. Auf die Bedeutung des Kohortenkastells weist der römische Helm hin. Für die Lage des Ortes am Main und den Zusatz im Gemeindenamen steht der Wellenbalken im neuen Wappen, das 1952 die ministerielle Zustimmung erhielt. Die Farben Silber und Blau sollen die Zugehörigkeit des Ortes zu Bayern seit 1815 ausdrücken. In dem ovalen Ortssiegel des 17. Jahrhunderts zeigte der Schild nur die Anfangsbuchstaben des Namens, darüber schwebend das Kurmainzer Rad. |
