Thissteadies the nerves for any subsequent incidentsof life, and especially for that last and inevitableincident, when the end—which is also, of course,the fresh beginning—does really arrive. Once, inthe course of holiday wanderings, it happened tome to come as near to finishing suddenly with thebusiness of earthly existence as a man could wellcome, and yet finally escape alive ; so that, since thestory has some picturesque surroundings, it shall benarrated here. We had arranged to sail up the Nile in a daha-beeah as far as the first cataract, perhaps even to the second.
