English: A putto showing a thermometer with the old Celsius scale (0°C boiling point of water, 100°C freezing point)
Nederlands: Een mollig kinderfiguur (putto) toont een thermometer. Vaak wordt beweerd dat dit een thermometer is met de oude schaal van Celsius, waarbij 0°C de temperatuur van kokend water is, en 100°C de temperatuur van smeltend ijs. Die schaal werd echter pas in 1742 door Celsius gepubliceerd en het is moeilijk voor te stellen dat deze dan al in een tekening uit 1738 is afgebeeld. Waarschijnlijker, maar ook niet zeker, is dat het Linnaeus was die in 1744 de schaal van Celsius omkeerde omdat dit praktischer was in het gebruik, en mogelijk is die laatste anekdote achteraf aanleiding geweest verband te leggen tussen de hier getoonde thermometer en Celsius. In 1732 had Joseph-Nicolas Delisle al een thermometer ontworpen waarbij de temperatuur van kokend water als 0° werd gekozen, en met de lagere temperaturen als positieve waarden. Mogelijk is het hier afgebeelde instrument er een van dat type. |
