Summary[edit]

Description

see talk page New Zealand’s first official television broadcast took place on the evening of 1 June 1960. Beginning at 7.30 pm, the broadcast only lasted 3 hours, but included an episode of The Adventures of Robin Hood, a live interview with a visiting British ballerina and a performance by the Howard Morrison Quartet. New Zealand was behind the rest of the world in establishing public broadcast channel. The BBC in Britain had led the way since 1936, with NBC in the United States screening from 1939.

The Prime Minister Walter Nash gave the green light for television in November 1959, but government research into the new medium had been happening since 1949, and experimental broadcasts were allowed from 1951. The first night’s broadcast was only seen in Auckland. Christchurch began transmission the following year, with Wellington and Dunedin receiving broadcast in July 1961, and July 1962 respectively.

In August 1960, television licences were introduced at the cost of £4. By 1965, over 300,000 licences had been issued. Live newscasting did not take place until 1969. Up until then, news bulletins were delivered to each centre and then broadcast.

This photograph shows Walter Nash and others in a television studio and comes from a series of photographs for the years 1935-1968, which includes all kinds of photographs that were collected by Walter Nash in the course of his political life. This collection sits in the wider NASH collection, which is comprised of the papers of Sir Walter Nash, former Prime Minister and member of the Labour Party from 1918 until his death in 1968.
