Omawiana fotografia ukazuje młodego Jana Matejkę (1838 -1893) stojącego przy kotarze w atelier fotograficznym na tle niewyraźnego, sztucznego pejzażu. Matejko ubrany jest w ciemną czamarę, w dłoniach trzyma kapelusz. Spojrzenie skierowane na wprost, spoza okrągłych okularów skupia uwagę patrzących. Czarno-biała, sepiowana odbitka fotograficzna została naklejona na firmowy kartonik z ozdobną winietką na rewersie oraz suchą pieczęcią w prawym, dolnym narożniku. Informacje te jednoznacznie wskazują na zakład fotograficzny Walerego Rzewuskiego w Krakowie przy ul. Kopernika 29 jako miejsce wykonania fotografii. Na podstawie zestawienia danych dotyczących działalności zakładu, jak również wieku Jana Matejki można przypuszczać, iż została ona wykonana przed 1863 r. Jest to jedna z najstarszych zachowanych w zbiorach Muzeum Narodowego w Krakowie, w Domu Jana Matejki fotografii ukazujących młodzieńczego artystę. (Agnieszka Zagrajek)
