urchased, against the wishes of the French Admiralty. Owingto this opposition of the French Marine, and the ab-sence of the Emperor when the ship was delivered, and the necessary departure for home of Mr. Webbbefore the Emperors return, the promised order ofthe Legion was not presented to him, although thearchives of their Marine Department show the prom-ise, but do not record its fulfillment.. Another ofhis notable achievements was the model steamer builtby him in 18(J(> for the Pacific Mail Steamship Com-pany, and afterward named the China, to runbetween San Francisco and China. This vessel, oneof the largest, strongest and fastest merchant steam-ships ever constructed in this country, has a capacityfor carrying one thousand two hundred passengersand two thousand tons of freight. Although she hasencountered several hurricanes in the Chinese andJapanese Seas, she has weathered them all and isstill considered one of the stanchest vessels in theworld. The limits of a biographical sketch do notpermit of reference being made to the many otherimportant vessels built by Mr. Webb, and but a fewadditional examples can be given in these pages.Prominent among them may be mentioned the GuyMannering, a Liverpool packet, the first full three-decked merchant vessel built in this
