Description

1860-1900 carte de visite photo of young woman in silk dress by W H Gill of 88 James Street, Devonport, England.

Points of interest
  • The woman has a purse or bag fixed to her waist.
  • The tip-up Indian table is of a type manufactured and exported in the 1880s-1890s. The tip-up mechanism did not work properly due to the fixed fringe on the table-top, so that the top could not rest vertically. They were very heavy, and often made of padouk wood. There is a large version painted white in the St Petersburg palace, in the conservatory.
