Summary[edit]

Description
English: Equipment and iitems related to the navy of Nazi Germany (German: Wehrmacht Kriegsmarine) during World War II, exhibited at the Lofoten War Memorial Museum:
  • Uniform cap for German U-boat crew members; A blue board cap/side cap (Bordmütze, Schiffchen) marked in front with the national 'eagle-and-swastika' (Reichsadler, Wehrmachtsadler, Kriegsmarineadler, Mützenadler) in yellow (army uniforms featured a white eagle) and an attached metal emblem on the left side: Hans Kossatz's drawing of a laughing sawfish (lachender Sägefisch) was taken from the Berlin magazine Erika – Die frohe Zeitung für Front und Heimat. It was painted as the mascot emblem on the German submarine U-96, and from 1942 became the symbol for the 9th U-boat Flotilla (9. Unterseebootsflottille).
  • Section of a box with an oxygen cylinder (Sauerstoff-Flasche) and four breathing masks for German U-boats.
  • Photographs and printed materials, including a German board game with the name Wir fahren gegen Engeland ('We sail to take on England'), a slogan from the German patriotic song Englandlied often used in wartime propaganda.
The Lofoten War Memorial Museum (Norwegian: Lofoten Krigsminnemuseum) in Svolvær, Norway presents the country's largest exhibition of military uniforms and small items from the German occupation of Norway 1940–1945, as well as from other events before and during the war.
