DescriptionWLA vanda Saints and other figures Casket ivory and wood.jpg |
Casket This ivory object, along with Victoria & Albert Museum, number: 700-1884 Link, features decorations, materials and construction techniques characteristic of Islamic Sicilian craftsmen, probably working in Palermo, for the Christian court of the Norman rulers (11th-13th century). Many such small boxes and coffers, intended for personal use as containers for perfumes, cosmetics, and jewelry, eventually ended up in Europe and took on a Christian function.
