Description

Letters patent with miniature of Henry VIII
Dated 1524

This document granted various properties to Thomas Foster, a master embroiderer and court official. The image of Henry VIII is one of the earliest known portrait miniatures painted in England. It demonstrates the connection between the new art of miniature portraiture and the illustration of texts and documents from which it developed.

Parchment, with written text; with miniature and decoration in paint and gilding.

Miniature portrait probably painted in London by Lucas Horenbout (also known as Hornebolte) (born in Ghent, Belgium, possibly about 1490-1495, died in London, 1544).
