Nederlands: Kruiswegstaties, Westfalen, ca. 1530.
Deze dertien reliëfs vormen samen een kruisweg. Dat is een verbeelding van de weg die Christus aflegde naar de plek waar hij werd gekruisigd. Aan het einde van de Middeleeuwen ontstaat de kruiswegverering. Gelovigen overdenken het lijden van Christus door stil te staan bij kruisen of lijdenstaferelen, kruiswegstaties. De eerste kruiswegstaties zijn opgericht door pelgrims die het Heilige Land, het huidige Israël, hebben bezocht. Ze willen de lijdensweg van Christus thuis herbeleven. In de Middeleeuwen zijn aantal en inhoud van de kruiswegstaties nog onbepaald. Pas in de achttiende eeuw wordt dit nauwkeurig vastgelegd. Voortaan bestaat de kruisweg uit veertien staties. |
