Stilleven met bijbel, 1885 Still life with bible

Van Gogh schilderde dit stilleven uitzonderlijk snel en gemakkelijk. Hij schreef trots aan zijn broer dat hij het binnen een dag had voltooit. Theo probeerde hem aan te zetten tot een helderder kleurgebruik en vooral tot het bannen van zwarte pigmenten. Van Gogh gebruikte inderdaad een kleuriger palet, waardoor het stilleven niet alleen inhoudelijk maar ook stillistisch modernet werd. Evengoed liet hij het citroengeel alsnog met een effen zwarte achtergrond contrasteren en gaf hij de lichtschaduwwerking toch op de straditionele manier weer.

Van Gogh painted this still life exceptionally quickly and easily, and proudly informed his brother that he had completed it in just one day. Theo was trying to encourage him to use brighter colours and, above all, to give up black pigments entirely. Van Gogh did in fact begin to use a more colourful palette, so that not only his subject matter, but also his style became more modern. Nevertheless, in this painting he uses a plain black background to contrast with the lemon yeloow, and his handling of light and shadowis quite traditional.
